First grade April News

Spring is here and the first graders are really “blooming”. We are learning all about measurement and time in our Math studies, as well as double digit addition.  Our reading is progressing at a wonderful rate and the children are showing growth in comprehension and fluency.  We are sure you are seeing this improvement at home, also.

Our monthly character value is respect. In class we are discussing what respect; means and how we can earn it.  The children have done some wonderful written pieces on the subject of respect which a re on display on the first floor bulletin board. I t is truly wonderful to hear the children’s thoughts on respect. They did a wonderful job brainstorming before the completed their written   pieces.

On Thursday, April 26th, the monument dedicated to George Underwood, one of Merrymount’s own, will be rededicated in a ceremony at 12:30 in the front of the school. All are welcome to attend.  George Underwood a Merrymount graduate was killed in action in Vietnam.

On Friday, April 27th “Poem in Your Pocket day” will be celebrated.  The first grader will have a poem (provided by their teacher) to keep in their pocket and recite when asked by other students. It is sure to be a fun day.

The first graders will be in charge of the ninth annual drive for the Quincy Animal Shelter. The drive will run through May 4th. The shelter is in need of the following items.

Cat food, cat toys, cat treats, clean cloth towels, paper towels, detergent, bleach, large trash bags, and “Yesterday’s News” cat litter. Thank you for any help you can give our furry friends.

Thanks to the parents and the PTO for all the help you give us.
